A conference organised by the Centre for American Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 0RN
on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 April 2018
CALL FOR PAPERS
This conference is the first event to launch a project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art designed to develop knowledge of the archival resources relating to American art in British collections and to encourage and support research that makes use of them in all periods, and by researchers at all stages of their careers, including those studying for PhDs.
The UK Archives project will hold a series of conferences and more informal gatherings intended in the first place to provide a focus for existing work in relevant UK archives and to assess the state of current research, but which will then support the development of further work, the identification of other archives, and the expansion of individual projects. As part of this support, researchers will be able to apply for small grants to undertake defined programmes of work. These events are intended to be developmental and to encourage the formation of archival research in the UK by scholars and doctoral researchers of US art.
The 3-year project will be opened by this conference. Researchers working now on archival materials in UK collections relevant to American art of any period are invited to propose papers on their work to be presented in April 2018. We welcome proposals that deal with the contents of archives, their importance for individual or groups of artists, and with questions of interpretation and historiography. Of particular interest are proposals that seek to apply interpretative or theoretical models to archival materials and their significance.
Submission process: Please submit abstracts of 150-200 words in English, along with a short biography of approximately 100 words to email@example.com by 1 February 2018.
Organised by David Peters Corbett, Director, Centre for American Art, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, UK.
