SAVAnT is very excited to present the first Call for Papers for the upcoming symposium: American Art First, to be held 19 and 20 June at the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library.
Our keynote will be delivered by Professor Cécile Whiting, Professor of Art History, University of California, Irvine; titled ‘Regionalist Art and Populist Oratory’.
There will be the opportunity for PhD students to participate in a workshop with Cécile Whiting on the 20 June. Details to follow.
We seek papers which engage and investigate visual art and culture’s role in any and all historical manifestations of American populism. Papers on the visual structures, rhetorics, regimes of representation and symbolic idioms produced by populism, from all sides of politics (and even non-political populisms) are welcomed, as well as those on representations of populism and the influence populism has had over artists and creatives, as well as the visual imaginary of American identity and its communities. This is only an indicative list – for further details please see the attached CfP.
We invite proposals for 20-minute papers. Please send a 250-word abstract, along with a brief academic CV to email@example.com by 14 March 2019. We will communicate which papers have been accepted shortly after. We can cover travel costs for PhD students.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries. We look forward to hearing from you!
